A microdose is meant to be small enough that you mostly don't feel it. Here's what people commonly report on a dose day, hour by hour: how long it lasts, which side effects come up, what too much feels like, and how our 150, 350 and 600 mg capsules compare. General information, not medical advice.
For most people, a microdose feels like an ordinary day that runs a little smoother, not an altered one. The usual word for this is sub-perceptual, which means below the level you'd clearly notice. The room looks the same, your thinking stays your own, and you can carry on with your day. Many people say they couldn't swear they'd taken anything. Others notice a slight lift, a bit more energy or an easier time getting started in the first few hours.
Expectations shape a lot of this. In a 2022 double-blind, placebo-controlled study, people took 0.5 g of dried mushroom, which is more than our 350 mg capsule. They rated the effects as stronger than placebo, but mainly when they'd correctly guessed they had the active dose. The researchers found no evidence of better well-being, creativity or cognition on the dose. So if you feel very little, that's normal. It doesn't mean the capsule is empty.
If you take an SSRI or another antidepressant, a microdose may feel blunted or like nothing at all. MAOIs and lithium can be dangerous in combination. Talk to a healthcare professional before you start if you take any prescription medication.
If you feel a microdose at all, it usually starts 30 to 90 minutes after you take it, is most noticeable 1 to 3 hours in and is gone by the evening. The body column below comes from lab studies of oral psilocybin, which your body turns into psilocin, the active form. In those studies, psilocin shows up in the blood 15 to 50 minutes after a dose, peaks at around 80 to 105 minutes and has a half-life of about 2 to 3 hours. The right-hand column is what microdosers commonly report.
A typical dose day
| Time after dose | What's happening in the body | What people commonly report |
|---|---|---|
| 0–30 min | Psilocybin is being absorbed and converted to psilocin | Usually nothing. Some people notice their stomach a little. |
| 30–90 min | Psilocin starts showing up in the blood | Onset, if it's noticeable: slightly more alert, a little warmth or a lift, sometimes a yawn or a jittery edge |
| 1.5–3 hours | Blood levels peak (around 80–105 minutes in lab studies) | The most noticeable window. Some people say they focus better or talk more, or that music and color land a bit harder. Others feel restless. |
| 3–6 hours | Levels fall by about half every 2–3 hours | Effects fade. Most people describe a normal afternoon. |
| Evening | Most of the active compound has cleared | Some people feel tired, or find sleep comes slower if they dosed late in the day |
| Next day | Tolerance is up: our calculator assumes about 2× needed a day later | Usually no lingering feeling. This is why most schedules make the next day a rest day. |
Those blood-level figures come from studies using full doses of pure psilocybin. At 150 mg of dried mushroom, plenty of people feel nothing at any stage, and that's an acceptable result.
Most people say a microdose is noticeable for about 4 to 6 hours, if they notice it at all, with the strongest stretch 1 to 3 hours in. Take a capsule at 8 am and most people report being back to baseline by early afternoon. That's why morning dosing is the usual advice.
On dose days, people most often describe small shifts in energy and mood, not changes in what they see. One study followed 98 microdosers for 6 weeks and found higher day-to-day ratings on dosing days, with limited carry-over to non-dosing days. Here's what we hear from customers and what the wider reports describe:
These are reports, not promises, and they're not treatment. The research is mixed, and a 2026 systematic review called the evidence inconclusive. For the research background and what people describe over weeks, see our guide on how to microdose mushrooms.
The side effects people report most are mild and short-lived: physical discomfort, anxiety, stomach upset, headache and tiredness. In a study of 278 microdosers, physical discomfort came up in 18.0% of reports and anxiety in 6.7%, according to a systematic review of microdosing research. Most people say these ease off within the same 4 to 6 hours as the dose.
Common side effects and practical fixes
| Side effect | What it's usually like | What people do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Anxiety or jitters | Restless, a racing mind, a tight-chest feeling 1–3 hours in | Skip the coffee, take a walk, and drop a strength next time |
| Stomach upset | Mild nausea or cramping in the first hour | Take the capsule with a light breakfast instead of on an empty stomach |
| Headache | Dull, usually in the afternoon | Drink water and eat. If headaches keep coming back, stop. |
| Tiredness or a flat mood | Yawning, low energy, feeling a bit off | Often a sign the dose is too high or tolerance is building, so add rest days |
| Trouble sleeping | Lying awake longer than usual | Dose earlier in the morning |
| Distraction | Hard to stay on a linear task | Size down. A microdose shouldn't get in the way of work. |
Don't microdose if you or a close family member has a history of schizophrenia, psychosis or bipolar disorder, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. If you're struggling, call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 (free, confidential, 24/7) or call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
A dose is too much when you can clearly feel it and it's getting in the way of your day. The most common signs are faint visual changes and a hard time concentrating. People report it fading over the same 4 to 6 hours, but it's a clear signal that your next dose should be smaller.
Don't drive and don't take anything else. Find somewhere comfortable and familiar to sit.
It peaks around 1 to 3 hours in and fades after that. Eat something, drink water and wait it out.
Call a friend. If you're in distress, call or text 988, or call SAMHSA at 1-800-662-4357.
Go down a strength (600 to 350 mg, or 350 to 150 mg), or switch from APE or ABV to Golden Teacher. Then take your full rest days before trying again.

Your first week is about finding the right dose, not noticing results. The first month is where people start to see a pattern, if one shows up for them. Most beginners use a schedule with rest days, such as the Fadiman protocol (1 day on, 2 days off), which keeps tolerance from flattening every dose after the first.
What to expect, week by week
| Period | What people commonly notice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Often more than later, partly from nerves and paying close attention | Dose on a quiet day at home, not a workday. Jot down what you felt and when. |
| Rest of week 1 | 2 or 3 dose days. Effects range from nothing to slightly noticeable. | Change only one thing at a time, either strength or timing |
| Week 2 | Dose days start to feel routine. Some people realize their first dose was too high. | Step up or down one strength if needed |
| Weeks 3–4 | Some people see a pattern across dose and rest days. Others still notice little. | Look back over your notes, remembering that expectations shape what you feel |
If a month in you notice mostly side effects, you can stop. Microdosing doesn't suit everyone, and that's a reasonable outcome. For a fuller first-month plan, read microdose mushrooms: how much to take.
150 mg sits inside the usual microdose range of 100 to 300 mg of dried mushroom, 350 mg sits just above it, and 600 mg is about twice the top of it. The figure is the weight of dried mushroom in each capsule, not the psilocybin content. Each capsule is filled to an exact weight, so there's nothing to weigh, and measuring a microdose by hand is harder than it sounds.
Capsule strengths compared (10-capsule prices from /order)
| Strength | Where it sits | How it tends to feel | Who it suits | 10 caps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 mg | Inside the usual 100–300 mg microdose range | Often not felt, or just a slight lift | First-timers, and anyone choosing APE or ABV | $100 |
| 350 mg | Just above the usual range | More likely to be noticed in the 1–3 hour window | People who've done a few weeks at 150 mg and found it too subtle | $125 |
| 600 mg | About twice the top of the range | Often clearly noticeable, and it can cross into the 'too much' signs above | Experienced users who already know their response, mostly on Golden Teacher | $160 |
Strain matters as much as milligrams. APE is stronger by weight than Golden Teacher, and so is Albino Bluey Vuitton, so a 150 mg APE capsule can feel like more than 150 mg of GT. If this is your first time, start with 150 mg capsules in Golden Teacher. Every batch is lab-tested, and the Certificate of Analysis (COA, the lab report) is available on request.
