How to Measure a Microdose of Dried Mushrooms (and Why 0.1 g Is Hard)

A microdose is usually 0.1 to 0.3 g of dried mushroom, and the whole range is only 0.2 g wide. Knowing the number is easy; weighing it is the hard part. Here's the scale you actually need, how to grind and mix so every dose matches, and when pre-filled capsules are the simpler choice.

The short answer

How much a microdose is in grams

A microdose is usually 0.1 to 0.3 g of dried mushroom, which is 100 to 300 mg. On our dosage chart, a 160 lb (73 kg) adult with some experience lands at 0.17–0.26 g of Golden Teacher. Your own number depends on your body weight, your experience and the strain, and the dosage calculator works it out for you, so we won't repeat the maths here.

Outside sources give much the same range. Harvard Health describes a microdose as typically around 0.3 g and names varying mushroom potency as one of the obstacles to studying it. Whatever range you land on, start lower than any chart says.

The whole range is 200 mg wide

The gap between the bottom and the top of the microdose range is 0.2 g. Every measuring problem below comes down to errors about that size, which is why precision matters far more here than with a full dose.

The scale

Why a kitchen scale isn't good enough

A kitchen scale can't measure a microdose. Most read in 1 g steps, and the finer ones read in 0.1 g steps. One 0.1 g step is the size of a whole low microdose, so the display can show the same number for 100 mg and 190 mg.

Resolution isn't the whole story. Resolution is the smallest step a scale displays; accuracy is how close that display is to the true weight. Cheap scales often list an accuracy of plus or minus a couple of their smallest steps, so check the spec, not just the number of decimal places.

Scale typeReads in steps ofGood enough for a microdose?
Kitchen scale1 gNo. It can't tell 0 g from 0.4 g.
Fine kitchen scale0.1 gNo. One step is a whole microdose.
Pocket or jewelry scale0.01 gWorkable at 0.15 g and up, borderline at 0.1 g
Milligram scale0.001 gYes. This is the one to buy.
  • Tare means zeroing the scale with your container on it, so you only weigh the mushroom. Tare every time.
  • Drift is the reading creeping up or down while nothing changes. Let the scale warm up for a minute, and keep it away from fans, open windows and your breath.
  • Calibrate with the test weight that comes with most milligram scales. If the test weight reads wrong, nothing else will read right.
  • Use a flat, hard surface. A soft tablecloth or a wobbly counter is enough to throw off a 0.001 g reading.
Potency

Grind and mix: why the same gram figure gives different doses

The same weight can give you a different dose because psilocybin isn't spread evenly through a mushroom, or evenly across a batch. A 2026 study of 14 Psilocybe cubensis strains, all grown and dried under the same lab conditions, measured psilocybin from 2.03 to 19.60 mg per gram (PMC). Individual mushrooms within the same strain still varied by roughly 13% to 23%.

So if you snap 0.15 g off one mushroom on Monday and 0.15 g off another on Thursday, you've taken the same weight but not necessarily the same dose. Caps and stems can differ too. Some studies find more in the caps, others find similar levels, and either way you can't tell by looking.

The fix is to grind the whole pack into one powder and mix it well. A lab study of several cubensis strains found measurements were more precise when multiple mushrooms were blended together before testing (ScienceDirect). Grinding doesn't make anything stronger. It averages out the strong and weak pieces, so each 0.15 g scoop sits closer to the pack's average.

How-to

Step by step: measuring a dried microdose at home

Measuring a microdose at home takes a 0.001 g scale, a grinder and a clean, dry jar. Here's the process in order.

1

Set up the scale

Put a 0.001 g scale on a flat, hard surface, let it warm up, and check it with the test weight.

2

Grind the whole pack

Grind all of it at once, a full 5 g for example, to a fine, even powder in a clean spice or coffee grinder. Lumps and fibres mean uneven doses.

3

Mix it thoroughly

Tip the powder into a dry jar, close it and shake it well. This step is what makes dose 1 match dose 30.

4

Tare a small container

Put a folded piece of paper or a small weighing boat on the scale and zero it.

5

Weigh your dose

Add powder a little at a time with a small scoop until you reach your number, 0.15 g for example. Tap off the extra rather than pouring.

6

Write it down

Note the date, the weight, the strain and how the day went. A notebook is how you tell whether 0.15 g is right or 0.1 g would do.

7

Seal the rest

Close the jar tightly and put it somewhere dark and dry, as covered in the storage section below.

Before your first dose

SSRIs and other antidepressants can blunt effects, and MAOIs and lithium can be dangerous in combination, so talk to a healthcare professional first if you take prescription medication. A personal or family history of schizophrenia, psychosis or bipolar disorder is a genuine reason not to use psilocybin. Don't use it while pregnant or breastfeeding. If you're struggling, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7 at 1-800-662-4357, or call or text 988.

DIY capsules

Filling your own capsules: the work, the cost, the consistency problem

Filling your own capsules is cheaper per dose, but every capsule has to be weighed one by one. A capsule holds well over a microdose (ours go up to 600 mg), so filling one to the top won't give you 150 mg. The only way to know what's inside is to put each one on the milligram scale.

Here's the cost comparison at our prices. A 5 g pack is $100. At 150 mg a dose, that's about 33 microdoses, or roughly $3 each, plus a scale, a grinder and empty capsules. Pre-filled 150 mg capsules work out to $10 each in a pack of 10 and $6.50 each in a pack of 80.

OptionPriceDoses at 150 mgCost per dose
Dried, 5 g$100About 33About $3, plus equipment
150 mg capsules, 10$10010$10
150 mg capsules, 40$28040$7
150 mg capsules, 80$52080$6.50

If you don't mind the process and own a good scale, dried is the better value, and our 5 g packs come in all three strains. If you'd rather not spend an evening weighing powder, that's what capsules are for.

Capsules

Pre-filled capsules: what 'filled to 150 mg' means and how to check it

"Filled to 150 mg" means each capsule holds 150 mg of dried, ground mushroom material, not 150 mg of psilocybin. The same goes for our 350 mg and 600 mg strengths. It's the same unit as the gram figures on the dosage chart, so a 150 mg capsule lines up directly with a 0.15 g dose.

You can check a capsule yourself. On a milligram scale it'll read a little above 150 mg, because the empty shell adds its own weight. For what's actually in the mushroom, every batch is lab-tested and we keep a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each one. A COA is the lab's report on what it found in that batch; text us at (971) 370-8474 and ask for yours.

Capsules don't change the fact that mushrooms vary in strength. What they remove is the weighing. If you want a fixed weight with nothing to grind, our pre-filled 150 mg capsules start at $100 for 10, and every order comes with free dosage guidance and a real person to answer questions about strain, strength or timing.

Strains

Strain changes the number: GT versus APE and ABV

The same 0.15 g is a stronger dose in Albino Penis Envy or Albino Bluey Vuitton than in Golden Teacher. Our chart assumes Golden Teacher potency. With APE or ABV, start at the bottom of your range or below it.

StrainPotency by weightMeasuring note
Golden TeacherBalanced, forgiving; the chart's baselineUse your calculator range as given
Albino Penis EnvyAmong the most potent cubensis strainsStart at the bottom of the range or below
Albino Bluey VuittonHigh but manageable, stronger than GTFor people who already know their dose

If you switch strains, drop back to a lower dose and take notes on how each dose feels, even if you'd settled on a number. A milligram scale makes that easy: a step down from 0.15 g to 0.1 g is just a different reading.

Storage

Storing what you've measured

Keep ground mushroom in an airtight jar somewhere dark, dry and at room temperature. In a study of how psilocybin breaks down during storage, dried mushroom kept in the dark at room temperature lost the least, and fresh mushrooms stored frozen lost the most (Oregon Health Authority copy of the study).

  • Grind one pack at a time rather than months of supply, so the powder doesn't sit for long.
  • Label the jar with the strain and the date you ground it.
  • Keep it away from light, heat and humid rooms like the bathroom.
  • Store it where no one else in the house can pick it up by mistake.

Our dried mushrooms and capsules arrive vacuum-sealed. Leave a pack sealed until you're ready to grind it.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes. 0.1 g (100 mg) of dried mushroom sits at the bottom of the usual 0.1–0.3 g microdose range, and it's a sensible place to start, especially with a stronger strain like Albino Penis Envy. Whether it's enough depends on your body weight and the strain. You'll need a milligram scale to weigh it accurately, because most other scales can't.
You need a milligram scale that reads to 0.001 g. A jewelry scale that reads to 0.01 g can work for doses of 0.15 g and up, but it's borderline at 0.1 g. Kitchen scales that read to 1 g or 0.1 g can't measure a microdose at all. Whichever you use, calibrate it with a test weight and tare it before every reading.
No, not reliably. The whole microdose range is only 0.2 g wide, and a pinch of powder can weigh anywhere in it or beyond it. Eyeballing also hides the second problem: pieces of mushroom vary in strength. Grinding, mixing and weighing on a milligram scale is the reliable way to do it; pre-filled capsules skip the weighing.
Yes. Our 150 mg capsules each hold 150 mg of dried, ground mushroom, which is 0.15 g, the same unit used on the dosage chart. The figure isn't the psilocybin content. A capsule reads slightly heavier on a scale because of the shell. COAs, the lab reports for each batch, are available on request.
Not always. Some studies find more psilocybin in the caps, others find similar levels in caps and stems, and individual mushrooms vary a lot either way. You can't tell by looking, so grind caps and stems together and mix the powder well. That way every dose you weigh is close to the batch average.
About 33 at 150 mg each, 50 at 100 mg, or 20 at 250 mg, if you grind and weigh every dose and lose nothing along the way. In practice a little powder always sticks to the grinder and the jar. Our 5 g packs are $100 in Golden Teacher, Albino Penis Envy or Albino Bluey Vuitton. On the Fadiman schedule of 10 doses every four weeks, 33 doses last a little over three months.
